HPI Announces NEW SUM Program Unit: Interpreting ESL Medical Dictation

HPI introduces a new line of SUM Program products called The SUM Program Career Development Series. These units are designed primarily for working transcriptionists who need to improve skills in specific areas but teachers and advanced students will also appreciate them. Each unit in the series will feature 1-2 hours of dictation that is considered "advanced" or "difficult," and some units will also include ancillary materials to enhance the learning experience.

The first unit in The SUM Program Career Development Series addresses the challenge of transcribing foreign dictators.  Called Interpreting ESL Medical Dictation, the unit features two hours of challenging medical dictations from physicians originating from Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.  Also included are 41 pages of articles by noted authors which provide helpful information about patterns and dictating styles common among dictators from each region, plus many helpful tips for transcriptionists.  Each article contains workbook-style exercises that can be submitted to AHDI for CEC credit.

Interpreting ESL Medical Dictation features authentic dictation by real physicians about actual patients (with all identifying information deleted) in the medical specialties of cardiology, gastroenterology, general surgery, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics-gynecology, orthopedics, pain management, pediatrics, psychiatry, pulmonary medicine, radiology imaging, rehabilitation, urology, and wound management.

Sample dictations for this unit are available for download on the Downloads page. These sample dictations are not used in the actual unit but dictations from the same physicians are used in the unit.  These samples should help you gauge the level of difficulty.

The CD includes the authentic physician dictation and accompanying transcript answer keys plus the 41 pages of ancillary material.  It has all of the new software features incorporated into our revised advanced CDs (see bulleted list below).  The price for the first CD of Interpreting ESL Medical Dictation is $99; each additional CD is $25.

The next units in The SUM Program Career Development Series will be radiology, followed by pathology.

SUM Program advanced CDs have been upgraded and are now shipping

HPI is pleased to announce that an updated and improved version of The SUM Program Advanced Medical Transcription CD, version 4.0, started shipping on February 20, 2008. Though there are NO changes to the audio files of medical dictation, the unit has been improved in other important ways:

  • All transcript answer keys for the dictation have been revised to conform with the (forthcoming) Book of Style for Medical Transcription, 3rd ed., from AHDI.
  • All five medical specialties (cardiology, gastrointestinal, orthopedics, pathology, and radiology) install in one installation instead of five separate installations.
  • Every screen has hot keys built in to eliminate the use of a mouse—essential for the visually impaired, but promotes production for all MTs.
  • There is no longer any special setup routine for USB foot pedals—just plug and play for Windows 2000/XP/Vista.
  • There is now full Vista compatibility and the program is also fully compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows.
  • Improvements have been made to the teacher password access process.
  • The word processing program now supports headers and footers.
  • Buttons added to the WAV player make it easier for users to jump to the beginning or end of a dictation without using the foot pedal.
  • Transcript Answer Keys are now displayed in a scalable format.
  • The Getting Started articles are now searchable and printable.
  • The Reference Tools are searchable and printable, plus the Reference window can now be left open while you transcribe.
  • The program now contains an auto updating feature so if the user is connected to the Web and a new version of the program exists, the user will be invited to update.
  • These upgrades in the programming will reduce the need for tech support among teachers and students.
  • The network version of the program has also been updated.

This is now the only version of the advanced SUM Program CD that we ship. Customers will receive it automatically when they order.
