Study Tip - Week 23
Think like an MT
It's natural for students to think like students. You worry about assignments, due dates, studying for quizzes and tests, and finishing one class so you can go on to the next one. You may finish your program with a 4.0 GPA, but will you be able to put it all together on the job? You can if you start today thinking like an MT.
Good MTs are skilled at seeing relationships, noting inconsistencies, and solving puzzles. Many of their questions start with "why" or "what." Why did he order this test or put the patient on that drug? What does the patient's occupation have to do with his illness? When he says "A2 is greater than P2," is that a positive or negative? What are the implications?
As you continue your studies, start training yourself to think like an MT. Ask lots of questions that start with why. Look for connections between what you are learning in medical terminology, A&P, or Disease Processes to what you are transcribing. If a particular phrase or term puzzles you, don't just type it and say "that's what it sounds like." Search it out. Figure out what it means or if you're mishearing it.
If you learn now to think like an MT, you'll will be able to put it all together on the job!
