Study Tip - Week 46
Using Sample Reports
Most English-speaking dictators will generally dictate multisyllabic terms or the complicated, nonroutine parts of a report quite clearly. Then, they "go to the races" when dictating the simple English and medical words or the routine parts of the report. Thus, experienced MTs often stumble over the ordinary rather than the extraordinary vocabulary in a medical report. Back in the days when MTs were mostly trained on the job, they were given a notebook of sample reports. If they had to transcribe Dr. Greenberg and found him difficult, they could turn to his samples in the notebook.
Although you won't find samples for the specific dictator you're transcribing, you can still use samples to help you decipher difficult dictation because, again, much of the unclear dictation is really routine.
Make a point of reading and notating any sample reports that come with your textbooks or transcription materials. When you are transcribing an H&P practice dictation, have as many H&P samples handy as you can. Then, if you stumble over the abdominal exam, you can look at the samples and see if the word you're stumbling over is a term routinely dictated by other physicians. When you transcribe a cholecystectomy, you should have cholecystectomy samples, and so on. (Note: When transcribing operative reports, you will also want to have your anatomy text open to the relevant chapter.)
H&P: The Nonphysician's Guide to the History and Physical Examination by John H. Dirckx, M.D. (published by Health Professions Institute), can substitute for sample H&Ps since each chapter lists the redundant dictation that may appear in each part of the H&P. You can also find sample reports online by performing a Google search using "sample reports" and "medical transcription" or just "medical." In this case, you will want to keep the quotation marks in your search.
Caution: Be wary of the accuracy of online samples and verify, verify, verify any term you are unsure of.
