The SUM Program Surgery Transcription Unit provides authentic physician-dictated reports for surgical transcription practice from all major body systems and medical specialties. The dictations are state-of-the-art, vocabulary dense, and sequenced optimally to promote efficient, effective learning. And because it’s from HPI, you know it’s the best investment you can make in transcription education. It contains nearly 8 hours of surgery dictations from the following specialties:

  • Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgery
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Genitourinary Surgery
  • Head & Neck Surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology Surgery
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery

The Surgery Transcription Unit Transcript Answer Keys
(included on the CD) contain many helpful articles and appendices:

  • Style Guide for Surgery Transcription (based on the AAMT Book of Style)
  • Articles and guidelines for surgery transcription
  • Extensive list of surgery terms for quick reference
  • Patient demographics
  • Operative report template
  • Index to operative reports

The Surgery Transcription Unit takes a student about 160 hours to transcribe.  The recommended prerequisite is either completion of The SUM Program Beginning Medical Transcription Unit, or about one-year of full-time transcription experience. The unit prepares transcriptionists to transcribe surgery reports in any setting.

This CD also includes software that turns your computer into a transcription workstation complete with an audio "wave" player. You need only an inexpensive foot pedal instead of a costly desktop transcribing machine.
